Content Management Systems vs Portals

Content Management Systems(CMS) – CMS is an application which enables users to Create, Edit, Manage, Streamline, Publish, Archive and Retrieve content. Earlier CMS systems are primarily used to create, store and feed content to any delivery system(i.e., web application, portals, intranet etc).

Primarily a CMS systems consists of two parts,

  1. Content Management Application
  2. Content Delivery Application(This is optional in some cms systems, since they support external delivery systems like custom web applications and portals)
Web Content Management Systems(WCMS) – Web content management systems are typically content management systems which evolved to primarily support content delivery. These systems main focus enables business to deliver content to multiple electronic channels based on user profiles(targeted content). They also support efficient content reuse and search functionalities.

Another important feature that all web content management indirectly supports is Branding. This functionality is often overlooked by developers and business stake holders.

Portals - Portal systems are integrated content delivering(integrated) applications, for which content is acquired from multiple systems and delivered in defined format based on user permission defined by the admin.

The main difference between WCMS and Portals can be simply puts as, WCMS are content centric applications where are Portals are application centric.

At present market scenario, most of the WCMS and Portal applications are capable of handling functionalities of other. But choosing a WCMS product or Portal should be based on how efficiently they handle the business requirements at hand.
